Our teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, facility maintenance staff, child nutrition staff, substitute teachers, coaches and all who work in our schools want to feel like they are a part of something great and that their central office administrators, supporters, school board, and community are behind them and are all working toward the same goals. Recruiting and retaining talented and passionate teachers and administrators is harder than it's ever been. We can't hope to be successful in facilitating that culture without reevaluating our systems and processes, salary schedules, and support devices.
We must remember that people - children - make up these statistics. More than half of our K-3 students are below reading level. It is imperative that a child be reached and coached before the the end of third grade for a successful educational future. It is up to all supporters in a child's life to help with this issue. Reading at home consistently and allowing children to read what they love helps in this process. Our educators need the support from parents and other caregivers to make sure kids are on the right path to success.
See HERE for Louisiana's literacy initiative that began in 2021.
Reading, writing, and arithmetic aren't the only skills necessary to teach and nurture a well rounded student. Our schools have implemented Social and Emotional Learning curriculum that is helping students achieve success in and outside of the classroom. I would also like to see more life skills taught, especially to our high schoolers. Balancing a bank account and being taught how to study effectively are two very important things not taught often.
We can't hope to move our community forward and provide a better educational environment for our children and educators if we cannot come together as a community for common goals and solutions. This takes every community member being a good neighbor and lending a helping hand.
To be frank, Assumption Parish, like most of Louisiana, has significant issues across racial and socioeconomic lines. It's time to stop beating around the bush, address the issues, call out the people who are keeping progress from moving forward, and work toward equitable solutions from this point forward.
An active pursuit of funds for our system should be in everyone's job description. We must look at our overall budget more closely and more frequently. Analyzing how our budget is performing and making adjustments needs to happen monthly, weekly, and daily.
The small town politics' practice of back doors and hand shakes must end. I will not participate in such transactions. The community is distrustful of their leaders when these practices are continued. Elected leaders hold a position of service, not power.
That which we do not measure cannot improve. When policies, procedures, and programs are put into place, the community needs to see regular reports on progress and performance of those items. Putting a plan in place but not evaluating and getting feedback while it is in place does nothing.
